What to do if a mercury-containing bulb breaks
You can be exposed to mercury vapour from fluorescent or energy saving bulbs by inhaling it. Please follow these instructions to reduce exposure to a minimum should a mercury-containing bulb break.
- Stay calm! Fluorescent bulbs only contain a very small amount of mercury.
- Open doors and windows to let air into the room.
- Be careful not to cut yourself on pieces of glass.
- If the broken bulb is screwed into a lamp, unplug the lamp to protect you against an electric shock.
- Pick up all the pieces of the bulb. Avoid touching them with your bare fingers. Wear gloves or sweep up the shards.
- Use paper towels or sticky tape to pick up small glass fragments and dust.
- Only vacuum if there is no other way of cleaning the surface. Get rid of the vacuum cleaner bag afterwards.
- Collect pieces of the bulb, paper towels etc. in a bag and take the bag outside.
- Discard broken bulbs and ones that no longer work. Please note that they cannot be disposed of as domestic waste!

How to dispose of mercury-containing bulbs
Mercury-containing bulbs must be disposed of properly to avoid pollution. Private households and companies can return bulbs to municipal collection points (recycling centres) free of charge (consumer quantities only). Fees for bulb disposal are included in retail prices.
Electronic products are marked with a crossed-out wheelie bin to show that they cannot be thrown away as domestic waste. Please return these products to appropriate collection points. Local authorities or retailers will be more than happy to inform you about recycling facilities.
